Natural Edged Monkey Puzzle bowls
Below you will find illustrated the methods I use to turn my natural edged monkey puzzle bowls.
This is only a brief glimpse into the process and a far more detailed article will hopefully be appearing in Woodturning Magazine published in the UK by GMC (If I ever get the article finished and Colin likes it). |

Mounting the section of trunk between centres. Try to keep the whorl of branches positioned as evenly as possible. Leave at least 4 inches above the branches for your natural edge. |
Turn off the ends of the branches with the lathe going as fast as you feel comfatable with and using very gentle cuts with a bowl gouge.... |
..... untill all the branches are cut cleanly. |
Start to form the bottom of the bowl and cut a spigot ready for mounting on your chuck. Once mounted bring the tailstock back up for addional support. |
Now shape the bottom of your bowl and the top of your natural edge. |
Hopefully you will now see your natural top coming to shape. |
Hollow out the inside |
Be carefull of the natural edge on the non branch bit as it will be very long and almost knife like. ( you may need to do a little tidying up later with the sand paper to get the shape in ballence) |
