Some examples of advanced course topics :-
|
i) One day refresher session on spindle
techniques in the morning and bowl techniques in the afternoon. This will cover tool
sharpening, both grinding angles and profiles, for different types of cut and grain
alignments (i.e. with or against the grain). We will spend some of this session studying
how one gets the wood from the tree (including which tree and when) and we'll end the day
covering various methods of finishing. The aim of this day is touch up your old skills and
learn a few new ones. Although we might not produce a finished piece, you will go away with
a number of "templates" which should serve as turned "aid memoir" to help remind you of the
techniques you have learned.
|
|
ii) One day on natural edged bowls
with the grain aligned as for normal face plate work. This covers orienting the bowl from
the wet log, cutting it then rough turning to a stage where it can be left to dry. We
will go through the various techniques that can be used to dry this 'rough out' and then
spend the afternoon finishing a 'rough out' that was prepared some six months or so
previously. Hopefully by the end of this day you will have one finished bowl and 'rough out'
long with the knowledge and skills to dry and finish it at your leisure.
|
iii) One or two days turning a natural edged vessel
from an Australian burl. These Burls are very hard and have no fixed
grain making them quite a challenge to turn. There is a small supplement for this
day to cover the extra cost of materials.
+£20.00 GBPS
|
iv) One or two days turning end grain vases
from both dry and wet wood. These types of vessel utilise quite different techniques to
normal 'face plate' or 'between centres' work, while being hollowed out, often referred
to as "Deep Hollowing" .The use of various hollowing tools (Scraper type ones, such as
the Stewert system and covered ring tools such as the Hamlet 'Big Brother') is covered
in this session. The emphasis is on a clean finish rather than stock removal through a
small hole.
|
v) One or two days covering long hole boring
techniques and turning table lamps. The steps required to make a standard lamp are covered
in this course and if required it can be extended to two days to complete a standard lamp
instead. Please phone for more details. There may be a small charge for materials if a
standard lamp is to be made.
|
vi) One day covering natural
edged trumpet vases turned from 3in logs. This includes drilling the vase with
a modified gouge and then turning hollow stem with a wall thickness of 16th inch or less.
By the end of this day you will have made one of these elegant tall vases and have the
skills to make many more at home.
|
|
vii) One day turning Salt and Pepper
mills. This day covers drilling techniques on the lathe and there is an
emphasis on copy turning and design to produce two forms that are the same. There
is a small supplement for this day to cover the extra cost of materials.
+£10.00 GBPS
|
|
viii) One day turning with Banksia nuts.
These wonderful seed cobs are very different to turn than wood as the grain runs from
the centre out. We will cover all the skills needed to turn these cobs and complete
a candle stick made from a Banksia nut with a Jarrah Burl base. If time allows a
turned apple will also be made from one of these cobs or the second candle stick
to make a pair.+£10.00 GBPS
|
ix) One or two days turning wooden fruit
using a selection of home made chucks and jigs, some of which you will make for yourself
as part of this day. The fruit you will make are apples, pears, lemons, cherries,
grapes and plums. Details of how to cut and sand a banana on the band saw are given
though this is not actually done on this session.
|
x) One day turning very
large wooden mushrooms (2 or 3 feet high and up
to 2 feet in diameter). These mushrooms are turned from large wet oak trunks (weighing
in at 100lbs+) and intended as garden ornaments where the natural cracking that
will occur after they are made will only add to their charm. The techniques
involved are not that different to those employed on a smaller piece and it
is just a question of scale. The important thing about this day is that it is
fun and a great opportunity to turn something on a scale you may not be able to
reach in your own workshop.
