Gregory Moreton RPT

It's just a bar

Who is he? What does he do?

Having practiced as a turner since 1991, Gregory has been on the Register of Professional Turners, held by the Worshipful Company of Turners since 1996. Acceptance onto the register is by invitation and judgement by a panel of peers who ensure that the highest standards of work and professionalism are met. It is the only professional body in the UK and enjoys a world wide reputation. He is a member of The Association of Woodturners of Great Britain.

He was featured in the first 'Diary of a Craftworker' series carried by the "Craftsman" magazine from 1997-8.

Gregory specializes in the unique and will consider any challenges. Commissions are welcomed. His more unusual work has included making replacement pieces for antique instruments, willow workers tools, reflexology instruments, which need to be crafted to each individual practitioner, tables made from tree slices and forms for potters. He is currently collaborating with an unconventional silversmith to create spectacular silvered forms in petrified wood. He also turns unique bowls, platters, vases and display pieces.

Gregory draws inspiration from the natural individuality of the wood and it is very important to him that each piece grows from the grain and inclusions unique to the timber, as a result no two pieces are identical. Furthermore he has a strict ecological policy and as a Christian he believes that we have stewardship of the world resources entrusted to us. As a result he uses only timbers which can be guaranteed as sustained. Most of the wood used is English timber which is either cut by himself or obtained from local tree surgeons. No timber which cannot be guaranteed as sustained is used. Each piece is individually numbered, and enquiries about the provenance of any piece will be welcomed.

Gregory exhibits nationally at well respected craft fairs and select galleries. He has been highly placed in several competitions within the woodturning world and has had pieces accepted for the nationwide display circuit. He teaches and lectures, both to interested parties and to professional turners.
